|
How does the SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall System
work? |
[Top] |
The SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall system provides
an integrated Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus solution that is
positioned "in front" of your existing email server acting as
secure email "gateway" which is able to immediately start
working to block and filter up to 98% of all Spam and Virus
laden emails using it's default "out of the box" settings alone.
The SpamWall system offers complete email protection at the
"network perimeter" level, before unwanted or potentially
dangerous and costly email reaches your network or mail server.
The design of the SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall system leverages
open source Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus solutions in conjunction
with a number of additional filtering and defense layers to
detect and filter out Spam and other unwanted email messages
along with Viruses and other potentially dangerous attachments.
Filtering and defense layers and methods employed include
Connection Control and Validation, IP/Domain RBL Blocking, Virus
scanning with archive decompression, Spam Fingerprint Checking,
and a comprehensive rule-based Spam Scoring System incorporating
Content Analysis (Heuristics) and Bayesian Analysis. This
multi-layer Spam and Virus Filtering Technology results in a
highly accurate Spam and Virus detection rate without filtering
legitimate email.

Firewall works see How the SpamWall
Works or view the SpamWall Online
Operations Manual |
|
|
How accurate is the SpamWall system? |
[Top] |
While other systems have spam detection rates of
40 to 70 percent, the SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall system is able
to provide high Spam/Virus detection rates of up to 98% or more
with very low false positive rates right “out of the box” using
only the default setting settings.
These detection rates can be further improved by the automatic
self-tuning and learning mechanisms built into the SpamWall
system as well as by adjustments made to the Spam Scanning and
Filtering engine. |
|
|
What about “false positives”, will we loose any mail? |
[Top] |
The SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall system is able
to provide high Spam/Virus detection rates of up to 98% or more
and has one of the lowest false positive rates in the
industry. In it's default configuration the SpamWall system is
designed to minimize false positives (legitimate email messages
being identified and blocked as Spam).
With no additional configuration or tuning the false positive
rate is typically at less than 0.1%, or less than one in every
10,000 email messages processed by the system. However, should
you experience any legitimate email being identified as Spam no
email will be lost as any email which is detected as Spam and
being over the "action level" set in the SpamFilter Config
settings will be directed to the Spam Quarantine, which you will
have access to via a web-based email interface.
Otherwise, these quarantined messages can be forwarded to an
alternative offsite (not on the SpamWall system) email account
that you may specify in the Spam Quarantine screen of the
SpamWall system control panel. |
|
|
What happens to email identified as Spam? |
[Top] |
When a potential Spam/UCE message is detected by
the system depending on the "Spam Scoring Levels" set in the
Spamfilter Config screen of the SpamWall control panel the
message is either "tagged" with the **SPAM** tag and forwarded
on to the recipient, or blocked from delivery to end users.
Emails that are blocked by the system are delivered to the Spam
Quarantine, which you will have access to via a web-based email
interface.
You will be able to log into the web-based email interface on
your SpamWall system and view all of the email messages that the
system has "quarantined" in the "spam" mailbox. If necessary you
will be able to retrieve any legitimate email message that may
have been inadvertently directed to this mailbox and forward it
on to the appropriate recipient. Otherwise, these quarantined
messages can be forwarded to an alternative offsite (not on the
SpamWall system) email account that you may specify in the Spam
Quarantine screen of the SpamWall system control panel. |
|
|
What happens to Virus infected emails? |
[Top] |
Email messages that have been identified as
being infected with a virus, worm or other potentially dangerous
attachment are blocked by the system and delivered to the Virus
Quarantine on the SpamWall system which you will have access to
via a web-based email interface.
You will be able to log into the web-based email interface on
your SpamWall system and view all of the email messages that the
system has "quarantined" in the "virus" mailbox. If necessary
you will be able to retrieve any legitimate email message that
may have been inadvertently directed to this mailbox and forward
it on to the appropriate recipient. Alternatively, you can
specify an off-site (not on your SpamWall system) email address
anywhere on the Internet where the quarantined email can be
delivered. |
|
|
What happens to Quarantined email? |
[Top] |
Email messages which have been detected by the
SpamWall system as either being Spam/UCE or Virus infected are
delivered to either the Spam or Virus Quarantine mailboxes on
the SpamWall system.
You will be able to log into the web-based email interface on
your SpamWall system and view all of the email messages that the
system has quarantined in either the "spam" or "virus" mailboxes.
If necessary you will be able to retrieve any legitimate email
message that may have been inadvertently directed to this
mailbox and forward it on to the appropriate recipient.
Alternatively, you can specify an off-site (not on your SpamWall
system) email address anywhere on the Internet where the
quarantined email can be delivered |
|
|
How often is the SpamWall system updated with new
Spam rules and Virus definition? |
[Top] |
The SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall system
automatically receives multiple updates of Spam rules and Virus
definitions up to several times per hour providing up to the
minute defense against the latest Spam campaigns and types and
emerging Virus and Worm threats ensuring effective and accurate
Spam/UCE detection and Virus protection. Unlike with other
anti-spam and anti-virus solutions there are no monthly or
yearly license or "recharge" fees involved for operating system
updates or updates to Spam rules and Virus definitions. |
|
|
Which mail servers and mail server software are
supported? |
[Top] |
As all Internet mail servers and software
utilize the same SMTP protocol to send and receive email
messages all mail servers and mail server software are
compatible with the SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall system. |
|
|
Will my SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall be compatible
with my network setup? |
[Top] |
The SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall system will work
with all common network configurations. If you have any concerns
about the SpamWall system being compatible with a specific
network setup or configuration you can contact SpamWall
technical support at service@spamwall.com for advice or
assistance or complete and submit our Online
Contact Form. |
|
|
Is there anything to install? |
[Top] |
No, there is nothing to install and no
configuration changes to your mail server or existing email
setup are necessary. All that is needed to start using your
SpamWall system is a simple DNS MX record change to direct email
for your domain(s) to your SpamWall system for processing. |
|
|
We already have an email server, why do we need an
Anti-Spam Firewall? |
[Top] |
Internet email servers do not usually have
comprehensive Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus blocking and scanning
capabilities. such as Connection Control and Validation,
IP/Domain RBL Blocking, Blacklisting and Whitelisting
capabilities as wall as the ability to view, configure and
control such things as system mail logs, mail queue management,
spam scoring levels and Spam and Virus quarantine capabilities.
These would be just a few of the features and services available
on the SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall. It may be possible to
install, configure and maintain some of these features on an
existing email server however it would be a complex and lengthy
task to source and install and/or custom program and develop all
of the necessary software applications and other services in
order to provide similar features and capabilities of the
SpamWall Anti-Spam firewall on your own mail server.
The SpamWall system is a complete "out of the box" solution that
is very easy to implement. There is no expensive hardware to purchase, no
server build, no software to install and configure, no
compatibility issues, no on-going maintenance issues, and no
steep "learning curve" involved. You can be up and
running within a few hours and seeing an immediate reduction of
up to a 98% or more of Spam, Viruses and other unwanted email
being delivered to your email server and email account users. |
|
|
We already have a firewall, why do we need a
SpamWall? |
[Top] |
A firewall is designed to protect your network
from external attacks and to control and/or limit the type of
connections and traffic which are able to communicate with
and/or access your network and servers, not to block or filter
out Spam, Viruses and other unwanted and potentially dangerous
email traffic.
The SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall is positioned "in front" of your
existing firewall and email server(s) and is able to immediately
start working to block and filter up to 98% of all Spam and
Virus laden emails using it's default "out of the box" settings
alone.
The SpamWall system provides an integrated Anti-Spam and
Anti-Virus solution offering complete email protection at the
"network perimeter" level, before unwanted or potentially
dangerous and costly email reaches your network or mail server. |
|
|
Does the SpamWall work with Microsoft Exchange? |
[Top] |
The SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall is 100%
compatible with any mail server software that is already able to
accept Internet email so all mail servers and mail server
software are compatible with the SpamWall system. This would
include Microsoft Exchange, Novell Groupwise, Lotus Domino,
Sendmail, Qmail, Exim, Postfix, etc. |
|
|
Is there any delay in email delivery? |
[Top] |
There should be no noticeable delay in the
delivery of processed by your SpamWall system as the process of
scanning and filtering happens real-time and takes only
milliseconds. However, sometimes when large attachments are
involved there may be a delay of a few seconds due to the
necessary Virus scanning which is carried out on such
attachments.
In general, as speed is not as critically important in the
delivery of email as it is with web serving for example the
extra couple of seconds which it might take for a message to be
processed and delivered by the SpamWall system is negligible
when compared to the amount of time and resources saved by
having basically Spam and Virus free email arriving at the the
destination mail server. |
|
|
Do you charge any per user or per domain fees? |
[Top] |
No, there are no per-domain, per-user, or
per-mailbox fees or other usage or license fees to pay. Also,
unlike with other anti-spam and anti-virus solutions there are
no monthly or yearly license or "recharge" fees involved for
operating system updates or updates to Spam rules and Virus
definitions. |
|
|
Are there any monthly or yearly "recharge" fees involved for operating
system updates or updates to Spam and Virus rules and definitions? |
[Top] |
No,
unlike with other anti-spam and anti-virus solutions there are
no monthly or yearly license or "recharge" fees involved for
operating system updates or updates to Spam rules and Virus
definitions. Also, there are no per-domain, per-user, or
per-mailbox fees or other usage or license fees to pay. |
|
|
Are there any limits to the number of domains, email
or user accounts which can be supported by the SpamWall
system? |
[Top] |
There are no fixed or "hard" limits on the number of
domains or email accounts which can be supported by a particular
model of the SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall. However there is a recommended load capacity
that is based on the average number of emails processed on a
daily basis.
The
domain and daily email message capacity numbers quoted for a
particular SpamWall system model are general recommendations based on the
performance of a given model of SpamWall system. The actual
amount of email which will be able to be processed in any given
time frame would depend primarily on the type and content of your email
traffic. If your SpamWall system is processing more emails than
the total daily recommended processing capacity for your
particular SpamWall system model and you start to notice a delay
in email delivery of more than a couple of seconds it may be
time to upgrade your SpamWall system to a higher capacity model. |
|
|
Is there a limit on the number of email messages
that a particular model of SpamWall system is able
to process on a daily basis? |
[Top] |
There is no fixed or "hard" limit placed on the
volume of email which a particular model of the SpamWall
Anti-Spam Firewall can process in any given day, week or month
etc. The numbers quoted are general recommendations based on the
performance of a given model of SpamWall system. The actual
amount of email which will be able to be processed in any given
time frame would depend primarily on the type and content of your email
traffic. If your SpamWall system is processing more emails than
the total daily recommended processing capacity for your
particular SpamWall system model and you start to notice a delay
in email delivery of more than a couple of seconds it may be
time to upgrade your SpamWall system to a higher capacity model. |
|
|
Approximately what daily volume of email messages
can be processed by the various SpamWall system
models? |
[Top] |
The general recommended average email processing
volumes for the SpamWall systems are as follows:
| SpamWall Lite: |
Up to 500,000 Messages Per Day |
| SpamWall Corporate/SME: |
Up to 5 Million Messages Per Day |
| SpamWall ISP/Webhost: |
Up to 10 Million Messages Per Day |
| SpamWall Enterprise: |
Up to 30 Million Messages Per Day |
There is no fixed or "hard limit" on the number of domains or
email accounts or the volume of email which a particular model
of the SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall can process. The numbers
quoted are general recommendations based on the performance of a
given model of SpamWall system the actual amount of email which
will be able to be processed in any given time frame would
depend primarily on the type and content of your email traffic. If your
SpamWall system is processing more emails than the total daily
recommended processing capacity for your particular SpamWall
system model and you start to notice a delay in email delivery
of more than a couple of seconds it may be time to upgrade your
SpamWall system to a higher capacity model |
|
|
Is there an additional charge for Virus Scanning and
Filtering capabilities? |
[Top] |
There are no additional charges for Virus
Scanning and Filtering capabilities and no extra charges for
anti-virus software licensing fees etc. |
|
|
Why is the SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall a better
solution than installing anti-spam and anti-virus
software on our existing mail server? |
[Top] |
The SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall is a dedicated
solution that delivers a number of advantages over installing,
configuring and maintaining anti-spam and anti-virus software on
your own mail server.

You can be up and running within a few hours and seeing an
immediate reduction of up to a 98% or more of Spam, Viruses and
other unwanted email being delivered to your email servers and
email account users, as well as realizing savings on bandwidth,
administrative and support costs. |
|
|
How will I have access to configuration options on
my SpamWall system? |
[Top] |
Administration of the SpamWall system is carried
out via an easy to use web interface control panel
that
provides access to Administration and System Setup Parameters,
System Status, System Mail Logs and Mail Queue, User Management,
Spamfilter Configuration and Scoring Levels, IP/Domain/Email
Blacklists and Whitelists, RBL Blacklist Settings and Spam and
Virus Quarantine controls. |
|
|
How do I change my MX record? |
[Top] |
This will depend on who manages the DNS service
for your domain(s). Typically, whoever manages your domain or
email server will have control of your DNS records. This may be
yourself if you have your own DNS servers, your ISP, web hosting provider or your IT person or department.
Many ISP's, web hosting companies and domain registries provide
a web interface for managing DNS records, while others will
change this information on your behalf.
Information on modifying MX records can be found in the
Setting
up MX Records section of the online SpamWall Operations Manual.
You can also
download a PDF copy of the SpamWall Operations Manual.
If you require any advice or assistance with modifying the MX
records for your domain to route email to your SpamWall system
you can contact SpamWall support for assistance with this. |
|
|
Will I have to make any configuration or other
changes to my SMTP or POP server settings or email
client software to work with the SpamWall system? |
[Top] |
There should be no need for any configuration or
other changes to any existing SMTP or POP server setup or to the
configuration of any email client software. All of your existing
email related systems and infrastructure should work without any
configuration changes or modifications. |
|
|
What levels of redundancy do the SpamWall systems
have? |
[Top] |
The SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall systems are
hosted in a Class A Data Center with multiple redundant fibre
channel connections to the Internet. All Spam Firewall
configurations including user account settings, logs and
databases are backed up on a daily basis. All of the SpamWall
systems are automatically monitored for connectivity and active
services on a continual basis. Server and network monitoring
software notifies our technical support people via SMS if a
problem is detected or if a request for urgent assistance from a
customer is received and response time is usually within 5-10
minutes on a 24/7/365 basis.
Using the SpamWall
Anti-Spam Firewall system will also provide a high level of
redundancy for your own email related infrastructure because if
your own mail server should go offline for any reason your
SpamWall system will queue or "spool" all of your email messages
for up to 5 days. If for some reason your mail server is going
to be offline for longer than 5 days you can
contact us and we
can configure your SpamWall system to queue all of your email
for as long as necessary. |
|
|
What happens if my SpamWall system goes down? |
[Top] |
All of the SpamWall systems are automatically
monitored for connectivity and active services on a continual
basis. Server and network monitoring software notifies our
technical support people via SMS if a problem is detected or if
a request for urgent assistance from a customer is received and
response time is usually within 5-10 minutes on a 24/7/365
basis. Multiple "hot swap" SpamWall units are on standby at all
times in the event that an urgent system replacement is
required. Should any
SpamWall system should stop responding for any reason our
technicians are notified immediately and will take appropriate
action to resolve the problem, typically in less than 30 minutes. |
|
|
How secure is email processed by the SpamWall system? |
[Top] |
Using the SpamWall Anti-Spam Firewall to process
your email for Spam and Viruses does not affect the security of
your email in any way. The SpamWall system does not back up or
make copies of your email and the only email messages that are
stored on the system are those which have been detected as being
Spam or Virus infected. If you wish, you can choose not to have
quarantined email stored on the SpamWall system as your SpamWall
system can be configured to forward all quarantined email to any
email address anywhere on the Internet.
Your SpamWall system does log some basic information relating to
the email messages processed by the system, such as the "from"
and to" information, as would any mail server in it's mail log
file. This information is accessible only to you as the
administrator of your SpamWall system via the
Mail Log Viewer
system incorporated into the SpamWall system control panel.
As your SpamWall system is a dedicated unit and only you will
have administrative access to your SpamWall system it is not
possible for any other unauthorized third party to access access
information associated with the email processed by your SpamWall
system.
Our privacy policy also ensures that
no customer data can be accessed by any third party without the
customer's explicit permission. |

USA. Level3 Communications has been our network partner of
choice for almost 10 years. Level3 maintains the largest
